Replacement of the 9th Street Bridge over Gowanus Canal, Brooklyn Borough, NYCSITE-BLAUVELT Engineers was retained by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), Bureau of Bridges, to provide construction engineering and inspection services for this complex, $33 million project that involved the complete removal of an existing rolling lift bridge and the construction of a new movable lift bridge over the Gowanus Canal under an existing NYC Transit overhead structure that carries subway lines F&G.During removal of the old bridge, an emphasis was placed on asbestos and lead abatement, air and soil monitoring, testing of all excavated material from the canal, and the disposal of all hazardous material in coordination with NYSDEC and the USEPA. The foundation of the new bridge consists of 30-inch caissons that were drilled to bedrock so as to minimize the impact on an adjacent NYCTA structure (the columns for which were monitored on a daily basis during construction). The bridge control house was equipped with hot and cold water, and all appropriate heating, ventilation and air conditioning units. The Ninth Street roadway from Smith Street to 2nd Avenue was also completely reconstructed and included a new water main and hydrant, new sanitary and storm sewers, a new gas line, new street lighting, removal and replacement of the asphalt and concrete pavement, and new curb and sidewalk. SITE-BLAUVELT's Resident Engineer on the project directed the completion of all inspection work, processed payments to the contractor, processed change orders, and coordinated construction between USGG, NYCTA, and NYC agencies. |
