Route 22 / I-684 Interchange (Exit 3), Westchester County, NY

SITE-BLAUVELT Engineers, as part of a Joint Venture, was retained by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to provide resident engineering inspection services for this complex, $7.5 million project which involved the reconstruction of 1.3 km of Route 22 from Maple Avenue (0.6 km south of I-684) to Route 433 (North Greenwich Road/Niles Avenue). The interchange was widened through the construction of turning lanes and two (2) new signals. An existing signal at the intersection of Route 22 and Route 433 was also upgraded.

Work activities that were completed as part of this project include:
  • Cracking and seating of the existing concrete pavement
  • Full-depth pavement replacement
  • Replacement of the existing median with single slope concrete median barrier
  • New curb and drainage
  • Relocation of highway lighting (private and public)
  • Installation of new signs, including a new cantilevered structure
In addition to the work being completed at Exit 3, the project also included resurfacing, new pavement markings, a new traffic signal and extensive modifications to an existing traffic signal in the vicinity of I-684, Exit 2.

As this project is located in close proximity to the New York City Watershed, temporary and permanent storm water pollution prevention work on the project was extensive. Both New York State and Federal wetlands were located within the project limits. As a result, particular diligence and care was exercised to ensure that the work of the Contractor complied with all local, State and Federal laws and regulations with regard to erosion and sediment control and storm water pollution prevention. As a result, environmental inspections were conducted daily, with all environmental activities being coordinated with the NYSDEC. Emphasizing the importance of this work, our project staff included both an Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector and Erosion and Sediment Control Specialist (part-time). Our Team's diligence in this aspect of the project helped result in the project receiving an 'Award of Merit - Environmental' in New York Construction magazine's Best of 2004 awards competition.
