Rehabilitation of the Bruckner Expressway, Contracts 3A and 3B, The Bronx, NY

SITE-BLAUVELT Engineers was retained by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to complete the in-depth inspection, deck evaluation, rehabilitation report, and preliminary and final design plans (Phases I-VI) for the rehabilitation of 2.7 miles of the Bruckner Expressway (all on elevated structure) in The Bronx. As one of the first and largest bridge rehabilitation projects in New York State to conform to the DOT's seismic policy, the project required the completion of a number of structural vulnerability reduction measures, including a seismic retrofit of the existing rocker bearings to elastomeric bearings and the installation of bearing restrainers. In fact, the new elastomeric bearings for the straddle bents supporting the superstructure are among the largest ever fabricated with bearing reactions of as much as 2,000 kips. Additional design work for the project involved the application of a micro-silica overlay to the deck, new safety-shaped parapets and median barrier, substructure repairs, painting, drainage improvements and lighting. Successfully completed under an accelerated schedule when the original completion was reduced from 28 months to a 21-month deadline, the project received an Award for Engineering Excellence from the New York Association of Consulting Engineers.
