H-Pile Testing at Naval Air Center / Lakehurst, Ocean County, NJ

SITE-BLAUVELT Engineers was retained by thecontractor to provide pile dynamic analysis testing at the new EMALS test facility within the Lakehurst Naval Air Center. EMALS (electro-magnetic aircraft launch system) is scheduled to replace the current generation of steam catapults in the CVNX class of aircraft carriers. The project called for the testing of various H-piles that were used in constructing the foundation of three interconnected structures. The required pile tip elevations occurred below the local water table and therefore a dewatering system was employed to keep the water from entering the excavated site.

The contractor employed the use of a Delmag D12-32 hammer capable of driving the piles to their required blow counts. Even though some technical challenges were encountered during the first several indicator piles, the contractor’s technical team worked energetically to produce a viable solution. This high level of team work allowed the program to save time and money by using dynamic pile analysis (PDA) on this project.
